Adem\u00e1s, junto a santa Catalina de Siena, fue una de las grandes propugnadoras de la vuelta del Papa a Roma desde Avi\u00f1\u00f3n. Escribi\u00f3 libros que, aunque no destacan por su calidad literaria, s\u00ed fueron importantes en el terreno de la m\u00edstica. Jud\u00eda de nacimiento, abandon\u00f3 la pr\u00e1ctica religiosa a los 14 a\u00f1os. Se declar\u00f3 atea durante diez a\u00f1os, aunque siempre respet\u00f3 y admir\u00f3 la religi\u00f3n jud\u00eda. M\u00e1s tarde, en la universidad, siendo miembro de la escuela fenomenol\u00f3gica de Husserl, varias circunstancias le condujeron a la conversi\u00f3n al catolicismo, pero una fue la definitiva: leer la vida de santa Teresa de \u00c1vila. Recibi\u00f3 el bautismo a los 31 a\u00f1os. Despu\u00e9s ejerci\u00f3 de profesora fuera de la universidad, hasta que los nazis prohibieron a los jud\u00edos desempe\u00f1ar la docencia. Entonces ingres\u00f3 en la orden carmelita. Estuvo en el convento de Colonia hasta que estall\u00f3 la II Guerra Mundial, momento en que se traslad\u00f3 a otro en Echt (Holanda). Ocupada Holanda por las tropas alemanas en 1940, dos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde fue deportada a Auschwitz, donde muri\u00f3 en la c\u00e1mara de gas el 9 de agosto de 1942.
